The View From The Ground

12/11/98

As the impeachment hearings come down to the final hours, I am again faced with a intense disdain for President Clinton that almost scares me. I am truly one of the 30% of Americans who are diehard "Clinton Haters". This is a bit of a misnomer as it really isn't a matter of hating, at least not at a personal level. The bottom line is that the Clinton Adminstration is totally, completely corrupt.

Bill is corrupt. Hillary is corrupt. They're all corrupt. I don't just mean good old-fashioned big city machine venal corruption, although that is clearly part of the mix, what with Hillary's cattle futures killing, Whitewater, the Hubbel buy-off, etc. I wouldn't want a crook as a President, but that isn't what makes me a Clinton Hater. And it isn't just the endless string of patent corruptions, from draft dodging to Gennifer Flowers Whitewater to Filegate to Travelgate to misuse of the IRS to Vince Foster to Web Hubbel to Chinagate to "protective function privilege". That proves a pattern of corruption, and should make us anxious to get the man and his cronies away from the levers of power. But it still doesn't justify the intensity of loathing I feel.

I think what does it is the complete subservience of the law to power and ideology. The corruption of the Clintons is, at heart, the corruption of totalitariansim. The law is not viewed as an immutable force that defines the boundaries of politics and power. It is viewed as, when convenient, a tool for promoting an end or, when it gets in the way, as an impediment to be discarded. The Law as The Law matters nothing to the Clintons. This is the defining characterisitc of the totalitarian. The single most frightening aspects of all the Clinton scandals are the violence and threats that surround them. My heart froze when I saw pictures of Teamster brownshirts in Philadelphia beating up Clinton protestors. No one can say that this happened at the direction of the Clintons, but the perpetrators sure as hell knew that Bill wouldn't condemn them for it either.

This does not mean that Bill and Hill are peas in a pod. I picture Bill as more the tinpot dictator type, abusing the law, abusing the people and amassing power for no other reason that to amass power and advance the agenda of Bill Clinton, the most powerful man on earth! El Jefe Clinton, connoiseur of cigars and women and flattery. One can almost see him on the White House Balcony, chest festooned with phony medals, issuing grand pronouncements while sending goon squads after his critics. Hillary is more the Lenin type. The steely eyed ideologue. She knows what she wants. She knows that the American people don't want what she wants. But she's not going to either law or democracy get in her way. Of the two, she scares me far more than Bill. If we fail to stand up now, if we fail to say "not on my watch, sir!", then we will be conceding the decline of the American Experiment.
